Eighty years after France’s Liberation, the Alliance Française de Glasgow invites you to an insightful evening with Dr. Karine Varley, a leading historian from the University of Strathclyde, specialising in French Modern History and World War II.

During this conference, Dr. Varley will shed light on the Allied bombings in France, examining their strategic importance in the struggle for liberation, their profound impact on civilian life, and how they helped shape the nation’s journey toward freedom.

 About our guest : 

Karine Varley is a historian and Lecturer at the University of Strathclyde, specializing in modern European history, particularly the Franco-Prussian War and Vichy France. She has published extensively, including Under the Shadow of Defeat (2008) and Vichy's Double Bind (2023), and is recognized for her work on memory, collaboration, and French political culture.
