In this bittersweet charmer, Louis, a nine-year-old boy from Paris, spends his summer holiday in rural Brittany.
Director Hubert cast his own son, Antoine, in the pivotal role of the sensitive child packed off by his pregnant mother (Christine Pascal) to stay with an old girlfriend Marcelle (Anémone) and her husband (Richard Bohringer) in this isolated village in the late 1950s. Louis befriends Martine, a slightly older girl who initiates him into the mysteries of rural life. Hubert’s script has conscious echoes of René Clément’s Forbidden Games and other classics about children.
"The squabbling couple won Césars and richly deserve them - Anémone for her sassy walk and prissy ways, Bohringer for his rough, bawdy tenderness" - Time Out
