Date: 6 Jan 2026 11:59am - 30 Jan 11:59pm GMT UK

The Jacqueline Munro-Lafon Essay Competition, established to commemorate and celebrate the life of a long-time member of the Franco-Scottish Society, is open to students preparing Advanced Higher French in all schools and colleges across Scotland. It is a collaborative competition which aligns with the writing outcomes of the AH French course.

The Jacqueline Munro-Lafon Essay Competition is run by the Franco-Scottish Society and the Alliance Française Glasgow. Please note that this competition is not open to native French speakers nor those with a French heritage.

The essay, written in French, should be about 500 words in length. Your essay can be discursive or narrative in style. You can choose to examine this topic broadly, or you may wish to focus on more specific examples from the recent past. The judging criteria for this prize mirror elements of the writing marking guidelines for AH French, offering pupils an opportunity to showcase their French writing skills in a national forum with a first-place prize of £300, and two runner-up prizes of £100 each, all sponsored by the Franco-Scottish Society of Scotland.

This competition will run under the following timetable:
  • Registration will close on Friday 30th January 2026.
  • All necessary information, including this round’s essay topic and supporting material will be sent to registered schools on Wednesday 4th February 2026
  • The deadline for submitting essays will be Wednesday 25th March 2026.
