World War One and its legacy 

How museums depict and interpret conflict and genocide?

Bringing together specialists from France, Germany, Belgium and Scotland, this conference will focus on how museums depict conflicts and the role of culture in the education for peace and reconciliation in post-conflict situations.


This conference will take place as follows:

  • Thursday 8th November at the Kelvingrove Museum, 10.30am-4pm
  • Friday 9th November at the Alliance Française / Goethe Institut, 3 Park Circus, G3 6AX, 10am-1pm

We are happy to welcome as participants:

Passing on the history and memory of the two world wars : what kind of cultural mediation ? For which type of visitor? New ways of story-telling, working with young people and with communities.

History through materiality : objects as the core of an heritage strategy, a case study at the museum of the Great War

France in wartime: types of mediation in military conflicts since 1945.

International attempts at limiting conflict through the establishment of ‘war crimes’.  How the Memorium Museum conveys this in its displays and educational activities.

The legacy of World War One in Germany, leading to the rise of extreme political parties such as the Nazis.  How the Documentation Centre conveys this in its exhibitions and educational activities.

Remembering for the Future – Engaging young people with the Holocaust and genocide at the St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art

Museums, memorials and exhibitions. The renewal of the offer in the context of the Centenary.
