Celebrate with us the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Glasgow! Join us for a special evening with Dr Jana Revedin and Dr Elke Mittmann, chaired by Dr Deborah Lewer about women and architecture in the Bauhaus movement. After the main discussion Dr Jana Revedin will read out of her book “Jeder hier nennt mich Frau Bauhaus”. Guests Prof Dr Jana Revedin is an architect, theorist and writer. She graduated from the Politecnico of Milan and is a doctor of architecture and urban planning at IUAV University in Venice, qualified to direct research. A professor of architecture and urban planning at the École spéciale d’architecture in Paris, she is a member of the LAURE research laboratory “Environment, city, society” (CNRS) and the UNESCO delegate to the Education and Research Commission of the UIA. Her theory of “radicant design” proposes the collective transformation of the contemporary city on the basis of an “open-work” morphology of participative experimental processes. Dr Elke Mittmann teaches and researches at the School of Architecture of the University of Strasbourg. She holds a PhD in the history and culture of architecture and has studied at the Sorbonne and in Leipzig. Her current research Architectures of Representation and Representations of Architecture includes projects on the ‘Contemporary Architecture in European Countries with a Strong Regional Tradition: the Example of Switzerland and Portugal’, ‘History of Industrial Architecture’, ‘Modern architecture in Germany and France since the 1920s’ – with a strong focus of the impact of the Bauhaus on post-war Germany and France – and ‘Shrinking Cities – History and Contemporary Approaches’. Moderation Dr Debbie Lewer is a Senior Lecturer in History of Art at the University of Glasgow, a specialist in Modern German art and also works in the field of the intersection between art and religious faith. She has published widely on modern art, culture and politics in Germany and Switzerland and is an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Fellow. Her work centres on the German-speaking avant-garde of the period ca. 1910-1933: Zurich Dada, Dada in Germany, German Expressionism, ‘Neue Sachlichkeit’, aspects of modern architecture and the wider literary and visual culture of the Weimar Republic. She has also worked on post-1945 German art in both the Federal Republic and the German Democratic Republic and has translated many important source texts from German into English. Her best-selling biographical essay “Jeder hier nennt mich Frau Bauhaus” (2018) on the emancipatory influence on the Bauhaus movement of the journalist and writer Ise Frank, Gropius’ second wife, was nominated for the Grimme Prize, the Walter Kempowski Prize Niedersachsen and the Leipzig Book Fair Award 2019.
She has curated and co-curated over 25 exhibitions about the history of architecture in Germany and France, including numerous for the Bauhaus Dessau foundation and has published widely about her topics in international journals.
