Franco–Scottish Encounters with Japan

Franco–Scottish Encounters with Japan

REINVENTING MODERNITY

As part of the celebrations in the Japan-UK Season of Culture, the University of Glasgow‘s College of Arts is organising a series of public events aimed at raising awareness of the long-standing connections between Scotland and Japan in the fields of architecture, visual arts, literature and philosophy.

Join us for a special conference on Tuesday 17th September between 10am-5pm.

The conference, coupled with an exhibition and screening, will highlight the work of some of the most prominent artists and writers from both Scotland and France who have travelled to Japan or have been influenced by the Japanese visual arts and literature.

Invited speakers will address the historic links between Glasgow and Japan in the work of Rennie Macintosh, as well as the more recent engagement with Japanese art and literature of Glasgow-born writers, Alan Spence and Kenneth White, alongside the evocative accounts of Japan in the work of French and Francophone travel writers such as Nicolas Bouvier.

Venue: Alliance Française Glasgow, 3 Park Circus, G3 6AX

Day & time: Tuesday 17th September, 10am-5pm
